This is when we discuss health history, do an assessment, talk about your goals, and decide areas of the body that will benefit from massage. From there we can decide the best type of modalities to use during the session.
How much do I undress?
Most clinical and sports massage can be done with some gym clothing on such as shorts and a sports bra, and I incorporate moving and stretching so this is helpful depending on the treatment.
What is a sports massage?
A sports massage focuses on a specific area of pain, tension, or injury with a goal to improve function and mobilization, and bring relief. It can be a bit more intense at times but doesn't have to be painful. They're not only for athletes - even your desk jockeys and weekend warriors can benefit.
What is a clinical massage?
Clinical massage therapy is a term that refers to the treatment of soft tissue to maintain or help rehabilitate the client’s physical function. This would include treating certain conditions such as sciatic pain, TMJD, frozen shoulder, post-surgery, and others.
Do you offer relaxation massage?
Full-body relaxation massages are very benefical to the nervous system, and while some of my massages will promote that, this is not my goal or focus. I can recommend others in town who can offer that style.
How often should I get a massage?
If your goal is to work on a problem area, you will want to book more frequently at first - usually once a week or biweekly. This can be decided at the first session. Once you get to a maintenance level, I suggest once a month to every six weeks. If you can schedule more frequently and find you benefit from it, all the better! *Competition and race schedules need to be considered as well as an increase in training usually demands an increase in recovery.
Are there times when I shouldn’t get a massage?
If you have a fever, cold, flu, or a contagious skin infection you should wait to book your appointment. Other conditions may require adjustments by the therapist (arthritis, pregnancy, etc.) but that can be discussed at the session.
